Viola's Problem Solving

This week’s blog is about problem solving and I have tried Ranking Priorities.
I have ENL 211 this semester and writing essays is the hard core of this course. I am not very good as writing essays and I have always procrastinated when I have had to write an essay. It is often the case that if the essay is due on Monday, I will start doing it at 10 or 11 pm on Sunday. Usually I can not finish it before going to bed, so I will get up early on Monday morning and finish it hastily. I do not want to be like this any more and I have chosen Ranking Priorities as my strategy to improve. The following is my ranking priorities for ENL 211. First, I list all the assignments due this week. Then I rank these tasks according to their importance and due dates.

In category A, I put essay #1. This is the first essay that will be graded and is due this Monday. As I have already aware of it, I start early last weekend to rewrite the first essay and get the final draft done before Monday. I am not in a hurry on Monday morning. In category B, I put five journals and first draft of essay 2. There are five journals due on Wednesday. I have almost finished and I just need to reread and rewrite. The second essay draft is due on Friday, so there is sometime to finish it during the week so I put it as B2. In category C, I just put some reading assignments in it.
This strategy is useful as I can do the most important tasks first. It takes some times to list the tasks and decide which one is the most important. But once created, the list is very helpful. I don’t need to linger around to decide to do which task first. I just need to follow the planner and I just push myself to move on.
This week is an exam week. I have exams or quizzes form MAT 295, AST 104 and ECN 203. I have a combined ranking priority schedule for this week. Here is the result.
I have the AST exam on Wednesday and MAT exam and ECN quiz on Thursday. I rank these tests according to the test dates and schedule my review work. Then comes the tech blog #2 and the faculty interview project. These are all writing assignments as I have got my three signatures from professors for faculty interview project last week and I have already got my ranking priority schedule. In category C, there are some normal assignments.
Every time I get one assignment on the ranking list done, I feel quite relieved. This strategy is just good and I will use it for the rest of the semester.

  1. I really like your ranking priorities strategy especially the way your put each tasks in different colors. I suggest that you also put in the due dates so that you can know before hand when the assignment is due not only which is more important. Good work!!

  2. I like your ranking priorities strategy as well. I think the different colors are a good idea especially if it helps you prioritize which assignments are most important and need immediate attention. I agree with the suggestion for putting due dates next to each assignment so you know how much time you have until each is due.

  3. I agree with Paul Laohapiengsak. I guess due dates should play a important role when you determind priorities. Good job, good job!

  4. Color coordination was a nice touch: definitely made things more organized and coherent. I also agree with the idea of incorporating due dates. Great work.
