What Motivates You?

For our blog this week the topic is motivation. When talking about motivation you are talking about what "drives you to perform well. In the textbook they define motivation as "a force". It  is the difference between being passive and being active in a situation. There are different types of motivations. There is External Motivation; which are motivators that come from a source outside of you. There is Internal Motivation; which are motivators that are within you such as a feeling of accomplishment, or a sense of satisfaction. Consequence and reward is another way to think in terms of motivators. You can go from unmotivated to motivated just because the consequence or the reward is so significant. If a specific consequence is negative and very undesirable to you, then it can be a motivator that you will want to avoid at all cost. A specific reward can also be powerful motivator if it is desirable and meaningful to you. Ex) if you get a 3.5 GPA in fall semester then your parents will let you go on spring break.

For me my major motivation to perform well in classes this year has been because it will help me reach my ultimate goal of being accepted into the sports management program. However I am also motivated to perform well in classes because when I look back on college I want to know that I ha great friends fun times and gave it my all in every aspect of college; especially in academics.

For motivation I decided to try out the Motivation questionnaire. In this table write reasons in which you are motivated to do a particular task. I decided to do my table on reasons I am motivated to do well in classes here at syracuse:

This is just one of the motivation tools the book has you use to see what motivates you personally. Everyone has different motivations and whether they are internal or external depends on who the person is that is motivated by them.

  2. Hi, I really like your Reasons for motivations chart. And I found that we have some same motivations, such as "learn to know myself better".
